Field Trip... The West Hill Dam

Our favorite family activities usually include hiking through some wooded area and discovering the hidden treasures of nature all  around us. We recently stumbled upon the West Hill Dam while on a country drive. (Truth be told, the littlest fella needed to use a potty, and we hoped there would be a ranger station. There was!) But what a fortuitous stop it was. We discovered this absolutely beautiful and tranquil spot, a National Park, cared for by Rangers from the US Corps of Army Engineers.

To say that they were open to our visit and helpful, would be an understatement.
The hands on assistance and information was so personal and thorough.
We cannot wait to go back and learn more!

The Dam was quite an undertaking, and is a beautiful spot.

The vistas are breathtaking...

The trails lead in many directions through grasslands, woodlands, and waterfront areas.

The West River flows through...

There are signs posted along the trails for the kids to stop and learn about
the animals and environment.

It's great to learn about the conservation and restoration work underway.

Our favorite part.... aimless observation and awe at the wonder of God's earth.

And spontaneous lessons about tree varieties from our resident specialist, Dad!

Glorious views, lessons of the land, and time spent together...
This one goes in the treasure of well-spent days for sure.
And we can't wait to go back with the dogs!!!
